01 Overview
Quinine suppresses the asexual cycle of development of malaria parasites in the erythrocytes. It has little effect on sporozoites or per-erythrocytic forms of malarial parasites. It does not, therefore prevent the relapse of plasmodium vivax infections.

Quinine Dihydrochloride BP 300mg
Water for Injection BP q.s
Quinine suppresses the asexual cycle of development of malaria parasites in the erythrocytes. It has little effect on sporozoites or per-erythrocytic forms of malarial parasites. It does not, therefore prevent the relapse of plasmodium vivax infections.
INDICATIONS AND USAGE
For the treatment of :
- Acute attacks for malaria including attacks due to chloroquinine-resistant or multi-drug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum
- Cerebral, severe or complicated malaria
- When vomitting, prevents retention of an orally administered drug.
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Quinine must be used with caution in patients with atrial fibrillation or other serious heart diseases.
Quinine must be stopped immediately if evidence of haemolysis appears.
Antimalarial agents and especially quinine, when given for prolonged periods, have been implicated in precipitating black water fever. However,in some cases,deficiency of glucose -6- phosphate.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The dosing and strengths of the dosage form are expressed in terms of quinine dihydrochloride(salt)
Usual adult dose and adolescent dose:
Intravenous (If an infusion pump is available), 7mg per kg of body weight over thirty minutes followed immediately by 10mg per kg of body weight diluted in 210ml per kg isotonic fluid over four hours,repeated every 8 hours until oral treatment can be instituted. or intravenous(If an infusion pump is not available),20mg per kg of body weight over 4 hours followed immediately by 10mg per kg of body weight diluted in 10ml per kg isotonic fluid over 4 hours, repeated every 8 hours until oral treatment can be instituted.
NOTE: The two dosage regimens listed above are equally effective.
